Quality of life in Denmark

As our everyday lives become more hectic and busy than ever before, living in a healthy and fulfilling way has never been more essential. And as we often talk about how to improve our quality of life, the Scandinavian way of living appears frequently as an example to follow. Now, that Denmark continues to stay on top of the rankings for several years, the choice of moving there is often justified by the fact that the quality of life is the best in the Nordic country. But what factors make Denmark stay on top of the lists exactly?

Behind the words like “hygge” and many books written about the Danish tricks and techniques to a happy life, lies a rather rational and simple reason for the Danes’ high quality of living. According to the 2017 Social Index Progress study, there are fifty factors that indicate and measure a country’s performance. However, to make it easier, the study basically captured three dimensions of social progress: basic human needs, foundations of well-being, and opportunity. Denmark scored in many categories over 90%. To mention a few examples, Danes feel generally safe in the streets, trust their government and are satisfied with their healthcare system. Environmentally speaking, they are one of the least polluting countries in the European Union, and their education system is famous about its children-friendly methods that countries are now trying to model. Interestingly, Danes are also happy with their weather and commute, as well as with the work-life balance.

It is easy to see that these traits of Denmark are results of a well thought out system and a chain of conscious decisions, that not only the Danish government, but its people made.
